Scholarships

The Heinrich Böll Foundation awards approx. 1,200 scholarships a year. Non-EU students in their Master’s studies will receive 850€ per month, in addition to individual allowances (tuition fees might be possible). EU students of the same level of study will receive 649€ plus 300€ book money per month. It is awarded for the regular period of study with the possibility of extension by one semester. More information.

The Erasmus+ is a European Union program for Education, Training, Youth, and Sport for the period of 2014-2020, implemented by the European Commission and a few supporting organizations to offer financial support for activities that increase skills and employability among youth in Europe. A „Bildungskredit“ is a fund granted by the German Government in association with private banking groups. It is mostly awarded to students at higher stages of their education. Details.

BAföG is an abbreviation for the Federal Education and Training Assistance Act. It gives opportunities to talented students to attend education despite the lack of financial means. The funds are often grants or free-interest loans. More.

International students in Germany are allowed to work up to 120 days a year. However, depending on only your part-time job earnings will not cover all expenses during your studies in Germany.

A position as a research or academic assistant at the university is ideal for students from non-EU countries. To find such opportunities you can check the university’s bulletin board or the university’s online job exchange.

Students, on student jobs, can earn up to 450 EUR/month without the need to pay taxes. If you are earning more than that amount monthly, regularly, you will be required to obtain a tax number. This way, a certain amount will be deducted from your wage every month, but you will get it back at the end of the year if you submit a tax return.
